Polynorbornene-block copolymers containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) were prepared by ring-opening metathesis polymerization of 1-[2-(5-norbornene-2-yl)ethyl]-3,5,7,9,11,13,15-heptacyclopentylpentacyclo[9.5.1.13,9.15,15.17,13]-octasiloxane (POSS-NBE) and methyltetracyclododecene (MTD) with Grubb’s catalyst, RuCl2(=CHPh)(PCy3)2. GPC results revealed that poly((POSS-NBE)-b-MTD) block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distribution (~ 1.3) were successfully formed via sequential monomer addition from POSS-NBE to MTD. Three different contents of POSS as high as 50 wt % in the block copolymers was fully characterized on the basis of 1H NMR spectroscopy. Preliminary thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the block copolymers under air atmosphere showed improved thermal stability compared to that of poly(MTD) homopolymer.
