High Quality Graphene Flakes from Ternary Graphite Intercalation Compound and Their Application |

In this research, we investigate phase change of ternary GICs in aprotic solvents, and propose an effective method for producing high quality GFs with largely increased average size compared to previously reported GFs from GICs. The ternary GIC used in this research has two intercalants, potassium (K) and tetrahydrofuran (THF), with stoichiometry of KC24(THF)2. Facile fabrication of stage-1 GIC through simple immersion process was confirmed, and its phase changes in aprotic solvents with varying polarity were further analyzed. We observed swelling phenomena only in DMSO, implying that DMSO can infiltrate into the interlayers of GICs most effectively. Thus we applied DMSO to exfoliate the GIC into GFs. The fabricated GFs showed low defect ratio (ID/IG) of 0.1 and oxygen content of 6.17 at% with sizes upto 20 μm and thickness below 4 nm. The GFs were further applied as conductive film and as filler material in polymer composite to show high electrical and thermal conductivity. |
