Compatible solutes are kinds of solute which make microorganisms endure high osmolarity. Usually, compatible solutes are synthesized in cytoplasm of cells. Typically, glutamate, proline, glycine-betaine is known as compatible solutes. Sulfurovum lithotrophicum 42BKTT is a chemolithoautotrophic bacterium which uses CO2 as a carbon source. To use CO2 as a carbon source, this bacterium assimilates CO2 through reverse tricarboxylic acid cycle (r-TCA cycle). In r-TCA cycle, when CO2 concentration is elevated, concentration of 2-oxoglutatrate follows to maintain chemical equilibrium. And through three enzyme- glutamate dehydrogenase(GDH), glutamate synthase1 and 2(GOGAT 1 and 2), 2-oxoglutarate becomes glutamate. In Sulfurovum lithotrophicum 42BKTT case, glutamate is not a metabolite but also compatible solute and these things explain how this bacterium stands high pressure of CO2. |
