Self-assembly of polymers containing nucleobases |

We synthesized new sequence-specific polymers of nucleobase-styrene and N-functionalized maleimide. Alternating polymerization of these two monomers made polymers equipped nucleobases and solubilizing groups that alternate with each other along the polymer backbone. Successive polymerization of two different nucelobase-styrenes in the presence of an excess amount of N-functionalized maleimide allowed us to synthesize polymers possessing a gradient of nucleobases along the polymer backbone. Due to the complementary hydrogen bonding between nucleobases, two block copolymers having a complementary sequence of nucleobases showed a duplex formation in solution. Block copolymers which contain a fluorescent dye were synthesized by RAFT polymerization condition. Depending on the sequence of nucleobases, self-assembled structure showed different fluorescent light either at each end positions or at a same end position. |
