Study on the behavior of liquid crystal mixture by temperature-dependent FTIR and role of hydrogen-bonded dimers as a dopant |
초록 |
Liquid crystal(LC) mixtures having cholesteric phase were prepared by LC molecules derived from cholesterol. When the liquid crystal has a cholesteric phase, the periodical structure of this phase causes selective reflection by Bragg's law. The wavelength of light reflected by this LC mixture changes depending on the temperature. To modify the wavelength of reflected light, usually chiral dopants are used for changing pitch of cholesteric liquid crystal. But in this study, we used 4-n-octylbenzoic acids that are not the chiral molecule. As a result, we found that these materials exhibited similar properties to chiral dopants, and their mechanism was investigated using temperature-dependent FTIR. Our hypothesis is hydrogen bonded dimers composed with the carboxylic acids. We anticipate many applications using this material. These are not only non-toxic liquid crystal molecules but also have a special ability for screening light like UV. It could be used in the cosmetic industry. |
