제목 Plasmonic Detection of Bacteria by Taking Advantage of Chemotaxis
초록 Detecting bacteria is important for public health. Conventional detection methods for bacteria require selective microbial culture process that typically takes from a few days to weeks, which prevents from fieldwork applications. In order to reduce sample-to-answer time, techniques based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) have been proposed. Among them, SERS have attracted much interest because it could allow to detect bacteria in a short time. Here we propose the plasmonic detection of bacteria by taking advantage of chemotaxis. First, gold nanoparticles are attached onto the surface of E.coli by electrostatic interaction. E.coli with gold nanoparticles are forced to be concentrated near chemoattractant (i.e., polysaccharide) across concentration gradient. Then, SERS measurements are systematically carried out. The attachment of gold nanoparticles on E.coli is also characterized by using transmission electron microscope and dark-field microscope.
