We can easily experience offensive odors from air conditioner of automobiles and most of people recognize these odors to be induced only by fungi. Actually there are not only fungi but lots of bacteria on the surfaces of eva-cores of car air conditioning systems and the odors caused by these bacteria are more offensive. Because microorganisms are forming mixed biofilms and they are more resistant to environmental stress such as antibiotics, temperature changes, and pH in biofilms, it is not easy to remove them and MVOCs are emitted continuously by their metabolism. To understand the offensive odors caused by microorganism, we cultured main fungi and bacteria of car air conditioning systems and analyzed their MVOCs using headspace SPME GC/MS. |
