Effect of K2ZrF6 concentration on the two step PEO coating of AZ91D magnesium alloy |

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) technology is being progressively acknowledged as an efficient and novel approach for improving the corrosion and wear protection of magnesium and its alloys. In this study a two-step PEO method was carried out to obtain hard and dens coating which is fundamental to the excellent corrosion and abrasion properties. For this purpose samples of AZ91D were processed in silicate electrolyte for constant processing time of 15 minutes. The as-prepared specimens were than treated in different concentration of K2ZrF6 for constant processing times of 15 min. Significant improvement in the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of the AZ91 was observed with K2ZrF6 concentration. Highest values of hardness and corrosion resistance i.e 1589HV and 120.30KΩ respectively were obtained for 6g/l of K2ZrF6 concentration. The surface porosity of the coating was considerably decreased with K2ZrF6 concentration. From the XRD of final specimens, Mg2SiO4, MgF2, MgO and ZrO2 phases were identified. |
