Synthesis and properties of perfluorocyclobutane-containing polybenzimidazoles |

Two new fluorinated polybenzimidazoles in which perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) ring was alternatively connected to the benzimidazole moiety through the ether linkage were prepared for the use in fuel cells or electronic industries. For the preparation of the polymers, two dimeric monomers containing PFCB ether unit were prepared via three synthetic steps. After the fluoroalkylation of methyl 3-(hydroxy) benzoate and methyl 4-(hydroxy) benzoate with 1,2-dibromotetrafluoroethane and subsequent Zn-mediated dehalogenation, they were cyclodimerized at 200℃ for 16h to afford the ester-terminated dimeric monomers containing PFCB ether unit. The fluorinated polybenzimidazoles were then prepared through the solution polycondensation of the dimeric monomers and 3,3'-diaminobenzidine in polyphosphoric acid. Glass transition temperatures of PFCB-PBIs were 262℃ and 269℃ and their initial degradation temperatures were over 400℃ under nitrogen, which are lower than those of non-fluorinated PBI. |
