Poly lactic acid (PLA) is a promising eco-friendly biomaterial as it has biodegradability and excellent physical properties. The most well-known PLA application is to use it for medical supplies. More recently, the application of PLA has been widely expanding into other areas like disposable products industry owing to the declining production cost of lactic acid, the raw material of PLA. Lactic acid has come mostly from food crops like corn starch through biological fermentation processes which can selectively produce specific lactic acid isomers. Utilizing food crops as feedstocks, however, may cause food security problems, biased crop production and a rise in the cost of lactic acid. Therefore, the research for alternative feedstocks is as important as process improvement. In this lecture, several possible feedstocks such as molasses, food waste and marine biomass will be explored for the production of lactic acid together with their relevant microbial fermentation technologies. |
