Synthesis of Polyethylene Block Copolymer via Chain Transfer Process |

Polyethylene is not miscible with many other polymers because of its nonpolar nature. Functionalization of polyethylene is an effective way to improve its compatibility, but copolymerization of ethylene with functional monomers is difficult because the functional groups act as catalyst poison during the coordination polymerization. To address this problem we have developed the method to make a hydroxyl terminated polyethylene via controlled chain transfer reactions. From the hydroxyl terminated polyethylene, polyethylene block copolymer was synthesized. Details of the polymerization and physical properties of the polymers will be presented. |
