Electrocatalyst for NH3 Synthesis Using N2 and H2O in Polymer Membrane Electrolyzer at Atmospheric Pressure and Low Temperature |
초록 |
H2 has been highlighted as a clean energy carrier with zero-carbon emission in its production and utilization. However, the H2 storage and transportation is difficult with its low boing temperature (-253 ℃). As a H2 storage chemical, NH3 attracts significant attention with high energy density (4.3 kWh/kg) and easy liquefaction at -33 ℃. NH3 has been synthesized by energy intensive Harbor-Bosch process (673-773 K, 150-200 atm), which uses H2 from natural gas reforming emitting significant CO2. In order to reduce the energy use and CO2 emission in the NH3 synthesis, electrochemical N2 reduction has been studied to generate NH3 only using electricity. In this study, electrochemical NH3 synthesis is studied at low temperature and atmospheric pressure. Firstly, the activity of N2 reduction catalyst is analyzed in basic electrolyte solution. Then, a device for the electrochemical NH3 synthesis is constructed using N2 reduction and water oxidation catalyst. Finally, the reaction activity and selectivity of the discovered catalyst for the electrochemical NH3 synthesis are quantified. |
