Preparation of monodisperse silsesquioxane spheres |

Amine groups in 3-aminoalkoxysilanes were examined as catalysts in sol-gel reactions of different precursors, tetralkoxysilanes and organotrialkoxysilanes. It was striking that 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMOS) caused formation of monodisperse spheres regardless of water compatibility of precursors. Optical microscopic observation, Si(29) NMR spectroscopy and IR spectroscopy analysis and elemental analysis showed that APTMOS was playing multiple roles. Some of spheres were subjected to chemical reactions to demonstrate the availability of functional group for different chemical reactions. New precursors were prepared from APTMOS and spheres were also prepared to demonstrate the effect of of amine on self-condensation. |
