Effects of surface properties of activated carbons on acetaldehyde adsorption |

The adsorption equilibria and kinetics of acetaldehyde on activated carbons were experimentally measured at 298 K using the volumetric method. Three kinds of ACs prepared from different raw precursors and activation conditions were selected. The physicochemical properties of the ACs were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, FT-IR, and XPS. Each adsorption equilibrium isotherm can be fitted by three well known model equations: Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips. The kinetic experimental data were correlated with the pseudo-first, pseudo-second and homogeneous solid diffusion models. Our results indicated that the surface structural and energetic properties of the prepared ACs played an important role in acetaldehyde adsorption. However, there is no clear relationship between surface functional groups and acetaldehyde adsorption behavior.
