제목 Hierarchical self-constructed biomolecular nanolayers comprising cholesterol and cholesteryl hemisuccinate for automatic array of liquid crystals
초록 A hierarchical biomolecular nanolayer strategy involving cholesterol and cholesteryl hemisuccinate has been proposed for the automatic alignment of liquid crystals using programmed interfacial self-assembly of amphiphilic biomolecules on polar electrode surfaces. Spontaneous formation of ultrathin biomolecular nanolayers was achieved by simple doping and in situ self-organization of small amounts of steroid-based amphiphiles in confined LC cells. Cholesterol and cholesteryl hemisuccinate self-assemble on the ITO surface via interfacial hydrogen bonding to form hydrophobic biomolecular nanolayers and induce uniform vertical alignment of LCs. Surface analysis showed that amphiphilic biomolecules of cholesterol and cholesteryl hemisuccinate form hydrophobic self-organized nanolayers with dense surface coverage on the surface of ITO electrodes via hydrogen bonding. Nanolayers containing hydrophobic steroid groups and alkyl chains on the surface induced vertical alignment of LCs via van der Waals forces. LC cells containing the proposed steroid-based amphiphilic medium provided low threshold voltages and fast response times comparable to conventional polyimide alignment films.
