제목 Simplified model for operability window of slot coating without vacuum
초록 Slot coating is performed extensively for fabricating films with a highly uniform thickness. To ensure a uniform thickness for a product, the stable operating conditions for slot coating, i.e., the web speed, coating liquid flow rate, and coating gap between a slot-die and a web, should be determined. Therefore, an operability window that can predict stable operating conditions has been studied theoretically and experimentally. Previous studies on the operability window of Newtonian coating liquid are based on the viscocapillary model by Higgins and Scriven (1980), i.e., a vacuum chamber with high web speed was mainly considered. However, many successive cases are reported experimentally for a low-speed process without a vacuum.

In this study, we develop a new simplified model for the operability window (SMOW) of a slot coating without a vacuum chamber. The SMOW is modified from a viscocapillary model by disregarding the relatively less important Landau-Levich contribution under the coating gap with a large aspect ratio. Furthermore, the SMOW is expressed in explicit functions of dimensionless numbers to readily identify the relationship among the operating conditions.
