제목 | Mechanical Properties of Acrylic Bone Cement Prepared with MMT/PMMA Beads |
초록 | Acrylic bone cements are widely used to fix joint prostheses in orthopedic surgery. After several years, mechanical weakness of bone cement is happened between the implant and bone. Therefore various attempts have been taken to improve the mechanical properties of bone cement. And polymer nanocomposites with clay have been studied extensively because these composites are more effectively reinforced than conventional ones.1 The interfacial effect between the clay layers and the matrix polymers is leading to high stiffness and modulus. In this study, modified polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) with organophilic montmorillonite (MMT), a sort of clay, is used as the solid component of bone cement instead of PMMA in order to improve the mechanical properties of bone cement. The modified MMT/PMMA beads were prepared according to the contents of MMT by suspension polymerization. Experimental cement dough is obtained with mixing modified PMMA/MMT containing benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and methylmethacrylate (MMA) containing N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (DMPT) of liquid component. The mean compressive strength of MMT/PMMA containing bone cements ranged from 89 MPa to 102 Mpa. in the specified range. Also, the presence of pores in bone cement due to the boiling or the evaporated monomer during the setting time has an influence on mechanical properties. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) shows the morphology of beads obtained by suspension polymerization and the pore size of fractured bone cements reduces through increasing the mechanical properties of MMT/PMMA bone cement.
