Development of an initiator feeding control system for the polymerization process |

Product quality control is one of the most critical issues in the polymerization process. Average molecular weight, particle size distribution, and productivity are key product factors highly associated with the initiator feeding rate. Despite the importance of initiator feeding control, many polymerization plants still depend on heuristic control. In the present study, the PID-based initiator feeding control system is designed and implemented in the field facility of our industrial partner. The critical issue for developing the feeding control system is measuring the controlled variable. Commercial flowmeters connected to the polymerization reactor are prone to be blocked due to polymerization inside the pipe. In order to solve this problem, the developed system indirectly measures the flow rate using a pressure transmitter installed in an initiator storage tank. The installed feeding system well controlled the flow rate of the initiator (error within 1%) than the previous manual control (22.4%). |
