Abstract: Articular cartilage repair remains a challenge to surgeons and basic scientists. The field of tissue engineering allows the simultaneous use of material scaffolds, cells and signalling molecules to attempt to modulate the regenerative tissue. Poly (lactide-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) has been widely applied to tissue engineering as a good biocompatible material. Fibrin has been extensively used and tested the biomaterials for wide ranges during the last 3~4 decades. It is prepared from fibrinogen and thrombin resulting in three dimensional molecular network. The scaffold mechanical strength, histology and immunohistochemistry were performed to elucidate in vitro and in vivo costal cartilage development and the deposition of cartilage-specific extracellular matrices. We observed better to keep the characteristic of costal cartilage cell in the Fibrin/PLGA scaffolds than that PLGA scaffolds. |
