In this study, we report a facile and versatile method for surface modification of magnetic nanoparticles using 3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine (DOPA) conjugated polymers. DOPA is an unusual amino acid abundantly found within mussel adhesive proteins secreted by marine mussels. Taking advantages of the adhesive characteristics of DOPA, we developed stable magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives. These nanoparticles were produced by mixing DOPA conjugated poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives with magnetic nanoparticles in an organic solvent and subsequently emulsifying in water. The adhesion of poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives on the nanoparticles was examined by FT-IR spectroscopy, TEM, and VSM. These nanomaterials can be potentially utilized for various therapeutic and diagnostic applications. |
