Nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers are considered as a promising candidate for making electro-optic devices, mainly because they offer many advantages such as light weight and good processability. In this work, we have prepared a novel polyester 4 containing 5-methyl-4-{5-(1,2,2-tricyanovinyl)-2-thiazolylazo}resorcinoxy groups as NLO chromophores. We selected the latter because they can be incorporated into novel Y-type NLO polyester and is expected to have the merits of both main-chain and side-chain NLO polymers, namely stable dipole alignment and good solubility. Polyester 4 is soluble in common organic solvents. It shows a thermal stability up to 250 oC with Tg value near 120 oC. The SHG coefficient (d33) of poled polymer film at 1560 nm fundamental wavelength is near 8.12 x 10-9 esu. The dipole alignment exhibits a thermal stability even at 5 oC higher than Tg, and no SHG decay was observed below 125 oC due to the partial main-chain character of the polymer structure. |
