In this work, we prepared a novel Y-type polyurethane 4 containing 5-methyl-4-{5-(1,2,2-tricyanovinyl)-2-thiazolylazo}resorcinoxy groups as NLO chromophores, which constitute parts of the polymer backbone. Polyurethane 4 is soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. It shows a thermal stability up to 250 oC in the trmogravimetric analysis thermogram and the glass-transition temperature (Tg) obtained from differential scanning calorimetry thermogram is near 118 oC. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient (d33) of poled polymer films at 1560 nm fundamental wave length is around 8.43 x 10-9 esu. The dipole alignment exhibits a thermal stability even at 12 oC higher than Tg, and there is no SHG decay below 130 oC due to the partial main-chain character of the polymer structure, which is acceptable for nonlinear optical device applications. |
