To obtain the desired nanotemplates from block copolymers (BCPs), several strategies for controlling the BCP microdomains have been developed so far, including surface modification using random copolymers, chemically patterned surface, graphoepitaxy, electric fields, etc. In the case of electric fields, Russell and coworkers demonstrated that the BCP microdomains can be aligned along the direction of applied direct-current (DC) electric fields due to the difference in the dielectric constants in each blocks. In this work we employed the alternating-current (AC) as electric field to control the BCP microdomains. When the AC fields are applied parallel to the microdomains in BCP thin films, it was observed that the microdomains were oriented perpendicular to the direction of AC electric fields applied, which is in contrast to the case of DC electric fields. In this case, the orientation of microdomains is significantly affected by frequency and magnitude of AC fields, film thickness, etc. |
