In spite of superior properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), mechanical properties of the CNT/polymer composite are not so much increased due to weak interfacial adhesion. The surface of the CNT was treated with proper organic molecules to fabricate nylon 6,6/CNT composite having enhanced interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties. CNTs grafted with nylon 6,6 were produced by reacting via reactive extrusion. Formation of the nylon 6,6 grafted CNT was confirmed with FT-IR, XPS, FE-SEM and HR-TEM. Changes in the interfacial adhesion between CNT and nylon 6,6 and the mechanical properties of the nylon 6,6/CNT composites with surface treatment of CNT were investigated. It was demonstrated that there is a strong correlation between interfacial adhesion energies of CNT and nylon 6,6 and the mechanical properties of their composites. Nylon 6,6 composites containing nylon 6,6 grafted CNT exhibited higher adhesion energy and better mechanical properties than those containing pristine CNT. |
