Aluminum hydroxide (AH)-filled poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites are used as engineering materials in structural applications because of their enhanced mechanical properties and lower production costs. These PMMA/AH composites have been used in various building applications such as kitchen sink, countertops, vanity tops, bathroom wall material, counters, and tables because of its texture of natural stone and easy manufacturing. In addition, PMMA/AH composites have lighter weight, better impact, pollution, and chemical resistances, and easy repair when damaged. However, PMMA/AH composites show the inferiority in anti-scratching performance inevitably compared with the natural stones due to the polymeric matrix. Economic method to improve the anti-scratching properties is studied based on surface coating and the effects of components and composition of coating on the anti-scratching properties are evaluated. |
