Enhanced compostability and mechanical properties of furan-based nanocomposite |

Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) is a flexible biodegradable polyester synthesized from petrochemical sources. Recently, biomass-derived 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid has been extensively applied to replace non-ecofriendly terephthalic acid. Apart from sustaining biodegradability, superior mechanical properties are mandatory for these furan-based polymers to compete with commercial polymers. Biorenewable fillers with modified surface are encouraged to improve properties of biobased polyester in the sustainable era. Herein, we improved the tensile strength of poly(butylene adipate-co-furanoate) up to 57% using chitin-based nanomaterial. Spin-lattice relaxation time from solid-state 13C-NMR analysis showed that addition of filler changed motional mobility of different components in the furanoate composite. Furthermore, this chitin nanomaterial accelerates compostability, rendering the nanocomposite as highly compostable material, thus broadening proper end-use management. |
