제목 Characterization of Nafion®/Silane Nanocomposite Membranes for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells
초록 Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) have recently widened the field of alternative energy generation. But there are two major problems which impede the commercial use of DMFC systems: severe methanol crossover and limited anode catalyst activity. Methanol is much more difficult to be oxidized in comparison with hydrogen and its crossover through thin ionomer membrane causes a mixed potential which drastically reduces cell performance. The perfluorosulfonic acid polymer (PFSA) membranes, represented by Nafion®, are not an effective barrier for methanol permeation. To settle these problems, we fabricated new Nafion®/3-aminopropyl triethoxy silane (3-APTES) membrane where 3-APTES particles were chemically bonded to sulfuric acid group of Nafion® chain. Methanol diffusion coefficients for the modified membranes were found to be at least 50% lower than for those of Nafion®. The cell performance of Nafion®/3-APTES 10 wt% showed better performance than that of Nafion®.
