Characterization of Nafion®/Silane Nanocomposite Membranes for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells |

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) have recently widened the field of alternative energy generation. But there are two major problems which impede the commercial use of DMFC systems: severe methanol crossover and limited anode catalyst activity. Methanol is much more difficult to be oxidized in comparison with hydrogen and its crossover through thin ionomer membrane causes a mixed potential which drastically reduces cell performance. The perfluorosulfonic acid polymer (PFSA) membranes, represented by Nafion®, are not an effective barrier for methanol permeation. To settle these problems, we fabricated new Nafion®/3-aminopropyl triethoxy silane (3-APTES) membrane where 3-APTES particles were chemically bonded to sulfuric acid group of Nafion® chain. Methanol diffusion coefficients for the modified membranes were found to be at least 50% lower than for those of Nafion®. The cell performance of Nafion®/3-APTES 10 wt% showed better performance than that of Nafion®. |
