Newtonian Viscosity and Viscoelastic Behavior of Concentrated Neutral Hard-Sphere Colloidal Suspensions
Simple expressions are given for the effective Newtonian viscosity as a function of concentration as well as for the effective visco-elastic behavior as a function of concentration and frequency for neutral monodisperse hard sphere colloidal suspensions over the entire fluid range. The basic physical mechanisms underlying these formulae are discussed. The agreement with existing experiments is very good. Extensions to charged colloidal suspensions and the incorporation of hydrodynamic interactions in the theory are discussed.
