Screening kinetics of cylindrical particles
The kinetics of screening for differently shaped particles can be used to separate particles according to their size, as well as to their shape. During a batch screen experiment the number of particles on the screen as a function of time was counted by using a CCD-camera and image analysing software. The screening kinetics of cylindrical particles shows a sudden increase at a well defined frequency and after an optimum it reaches a constant value. The optimal frequency of the screen was shown to depend on the length of the cylinder. The measured screening kinetics could well predict the grade and recovery of a separation based on the screening kinetics. In a first attempt to identify the critical elements of a physical model for the observed screening kinetics, it was shown by experiment, that the distribution of particle orientations on a screen is similar to that on a closed surface.
