Scalable Equipment for Process Development
During scale-up of processes the throughput or production capacity is increased under equal or similar process conditions. This contribution describes the application and scale-up strategy of continuous-flow micro-structured reactors. Dimensionless numbers of the flow and the energy dissipation rate within the mixing channel determine mixing and heat transfer characteristics. Kinetic parameters are introduced to describe safe scale-up of exothermic reactions with convective heat transfer. Plant setup and scale-up is easier with modular equipment on different platform levels described by the flow rate or other process parameters. An example illustrates the scale-up of a pharmaceutical process to the ton range.
