Growth and characterization of Ce-doped Ca-3(BO3)(2) crystals for neutron scintillator
Single crystals of undoped and Ce3+-doped Ca-3(BO3)(2) (CBO) are grown by the Czochralski (CZ) method with an RF heating system. Undoped CBO crystal has high transmittance in the 190-900 nm wavelength range, while the absorption bands were observed around 275 and 350 nm due to the transition from the 4f ground state levels of F-2(5/2) and F-2(7/2) to Ce3+ 5d excited state in Ce3+-doped one. The photoluminescence spectrum of Ce3+-doped CBO crystal showed strong emission band around 400 nm under both 275 and 350 nm excitation due to the 5d-4f transition of Ce3+. In the measurement of pulse height spectra under Am-241 5.5 MeV alpha-ray excitation, Ce3+-doped CBO showed higher energy resolution compared with that of crystal grown by the micro-pulling down (mu-PD) method.
