Addition of a small amount of zinc to the potassium-thallium system leads to the formation of a cluster with Zn centering an approximately D-4h bicapped square antiprismatic thallium polyhedron. These are well separated by potassium, as shown. Molecular orbital calculations and magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm the Zintl phase classification.
