Transient behavior analysis of a new designed passive direct methanol fuel cell fed with highly concentrated methanol
A new structure of passive direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) with two methanol reservoirs separated by a porous medium layer is designed and a corresponding mathematical model is presented. The new designed passive DMFC can be directly fed with highly concentrated methanol solution or neat methanol. The porosity (epsilon(pr)) of the porous medium layer is optimized using the proposed model. Some operation parameters are also optimized by both the numerical calculation and experimental measurement. The new designed DMFC can be continuously operated for about 4.5 times longer than a conventional passive DMFC with the optimum parameters. The methanol crossover during the same discharging is only about 50% higher. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
