The Significance of Indirectly Heated Gasifiers for the Generation of Medium Calorific Value Syngas Through Biomass Gasification
Biomass contains high oxygen (40-50%) and moisture content, when combusted and gasified simultaneously with air/steam, results in a low heating value of the product syngas typically less than 5 MJ/m3. The low heating value poses a problem for downstream combustion for power generation, that are typically designed for a consistent medium to high heating value fuels. The present article highlights the ability of indirectly fired gasifiers to generate medium calorific value (15 MJ/m3) syngas using air as the combustion medium, in addition to addressing various technologies that are in practice globally at commercial/pilot scale, with respect to bubbling fluidized bed, circulating fluidized beds, and dual fluidized beds.
