A Novel Method to Discriminate between Plant- and Petroleum-derived Plastics by Stable Carbon Isotope Analysis
We determined stable carbon isotopic compositions (delta C-13) of plastics to discriminate between plant- and petroleum-derived plastics. The delta C-13 values of plastics derived from C-4 plants are significantly higher than those of petroleum-derived plastics. These results suggest that the stable isotope analysis would be useful in discrimination of plant-derived plastics from petroleum-derived plastics.
