Performance of rotating packed beds in removing ozone from gaseous streams
This work investigated the feasibility of applying the rotating packed bed (RPB) to the removal of ozone from gaseous streams. Ozone removal experiments were conducted by absorption with Fe2+ solution to examine the ozone removal efficiency at various operating variables including RPB speed, gas flow rate, liquid flow rate and Fe2+ concentration. The RPB has an inner radius of 1.0 cm, outer radius of 4.4 cm and an axial height of 2.0 cm. The RPB speed ranged from 300 to 1800 rpm, providing 3-98 equivalent gravitational force. Experimental results indicated that the RPB speed enhanced the ozone removal efficiency. In addition, the ozone removal efficiency appeared to increase with an increasing liquid flow rate and Fe2+ concentration but decrease with an increasing gas flow rate. Owing to that the RPB could offer a reduction in the ozone mass transfer resistance, the RPB could be an effective absorber for the removal of ozone from waste gas streams. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V.
