A hydrolyzable polyrotaxane composed of all ester-containing poly(ethylene glycol) chain and alpha-cyclodextrins showed gradual degradation into its water-soluble components in aqueous conditions, based on the dissociation of the polyrotaxane triggered by the hydrolysis of the ester groups.
