A formalised procedure for the selection of solid/liquid separation equipment is presented, based on existing software and published information. The step-by-step approach in the procedure eliminates unsuitable equipment, and provides a shortlist of hardware potentially suitable for the application. Important aspects of each step are tabulated, to provide an aid to the design engineer. The approach is designed to be capable of extension to form a computer-based expert system.
