PREDICTION OF PAVING GRADE BITUMEN PERFORMANCE
The present paper describes one possibility to predict the paving grade bitumens performance. The petroleum feedstocks and bitumens produced by oxidation, compounding, blending, etc, were separated in saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltenes. The data were ploted in a triangular diagram. The following ranges of fraction compositions have emerged: ''very good'' bitumens: S-12.5 +/- 1.5%; (Ar+R)-65 +/- 2.5%; A-22.5 +/- 2.5%; bitumens with ''inadequate'' physical properties: S-22.0 +/- 2% (Ar+R) -56.0 +/- 2%; and A-22.5 +/- 2.5%. Depending upon the resulting location on the diagram for any particular raw material, it is possible to judge the characteristics for producing paving grade bitumen of a given quality.
