The main objective of the study was to compare the properties of fluxing oils derived from coal tar and petroleum oil used in cut-back road binders, with regard to the safety in use for the protection of workers. In particular studies were conducted on ignition properties and the toxicological aspect of genetic mutation and cancer. As a subsidiary objective the development of a method of discriminating between fluxing oils derived from coal tar and petroleum oil sources was sought.
