Enzymatic oxidation of H-2 in atmospheric O-2: The electrochemistry of energy generation from trace H-2 by aerobic microorganisms
Certain microoganisims such as Ratsiona spp. can metabolize trace H-2 in air because they express an unusual O-2-tolerent [NiFe)-hydrogenase. Using protein film voltammetry methods we demonstrate the first quantitative measurements of the oxidation. by a purified enzyme of physiologically relevant levels of H-2 (below 10 ppm) in the presence of atmospheric O-2.
