Development of an Immobilized System for Downstream Processing of Lectin from Zymomonas-Mobilis Mtcc-90
Lectins are protein molecules that have recognition for specific carbohydrates. Since the binding of lectins with carbohydrates is reversible, lectins are proving to be advanced molecular tools; therefore, many lectins of plant origin and a Sew from bacteria are commercially available. A thermolabile lectin molecule that recognizes glucose among other carbohydrates has been isolated from Zymomonas mobilis MTCC 90. An immobilized system with hydrolyzed starch has been developed for the purification of this lectin. A similar system, likewise, has also been developed with hydrolyzed cellulose. An 18.57-fold purification of the lectin has been achieved.
