Development of thermoplastic Polyolefins for Bumper Cover : 2. Effect of Rubber Viscosity
The effect of viscosity and content of ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR) on rheology, morphology, and mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP) block copolymer/EPR blends was studied. Melt blends were prepared in a twin-screw extruder varing rubber content up to 40 wt%. Complex viscosity vs. rubber content plot showed a slight positive deviation from the additivity. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of blends showed that the size of dispersed phase was decreased with decreasing the viscosity of rubber. And the elongated structure was observed near the surface of injection-molded specimen. Flexural modulus, tensile strength, Rockwell hardness, and mold shrinkage were decreased with rubber content, however, elongation at break and notched Izod impact strength were increased.
