Deregulation of the Japanese oil products market
Japan has maintained tight control over its oil market with the result that Japanese consumers have faced higher net-of-tax oil product prices than other Organization for Economic Go-operation and Development (OECD) consumers. In April 1996, the market was deregulated. We explore, through simulation, the welfare effect of this deregulation, taking into account the pollution costs arising from increased emissions.
