The first example of a mononuclear boron dication has been prepared and isolated as the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate) salt of its 2,2'-bipyridine complex. The compound [(HC(CMe)(2)(NC6F5)(2)(bipy)B][OTf](2) (1) was prepared by treatment of the beta-diketiminate-supported boron bis(trifluoromethylsulfonate) [(HC(CMe)(2)(NC6F5)(2)B(OTf)(2)] with 2,2'-bipyridine. The X-ray crystal structures of 1 and 2 were determined, and DFT calculations were performed on and [(HC(CMe)(2)(NC6F5)(2)B](2+).
