Maintenance activity for partial intervention of retubing on four distillers multi-flash double-deck (capacity 3 mgd for each unit) of Abu Dhabi power station after 18 years of operation activity
The activities in subject are part of a general contract of maintenance that NITCO has received from the Water and Electricity Department of Abu Dhabi, for five power stations. Partial retubing on the first three stages of distillers of the power station has been necessary because of tube bundles leakage and consequent loss of production efficiency. After a detailed investigation on tube bundles and relative supports, baffle etc, especially by Eddy Current Tests, it has been decided to make a partial retubing of the first three stages for the four distillers. This choice has been taken on the basis of cost-benefits analysis with the Client. The technical solution utilized has required to assume same risks because of the originality of the intervention adopted. Besides, we point out that a complete retubing should be more expensive and it should also take more time with a consequent loss of production. Therefore, a partial intervention on tube bundles in eight weeks for the three stages of each distiller has been studied and realized. Briefly, the activity has started making an investigation to define the more damaged zone; the consequent removal of the relevant tubes; the partial remaking of tubes support plates, tie rods etc, and at the end, the retubing of bundle sectors. For the execution of the work, a carefully detailed design of the intervention has been necessary and, in sequence, a detailed execution of mechanical activities at workshop and related erection on site. Following the completion of the work (first part of 1996) and consequent put in service of the plant, the process parameters of production were comparable with the original ones at the beginning of the operation service.
