The preparation of high purity alpha-octithiophene (alpha-8T) by vacuum sublimation and the investigation of its optical properties in solution and as thin films and single crystals are reported. alpha-8T is probably the ultimate unsubstituted oligothiophene to be processable as a pure crystalline compound, In addition, the first experimental evidence for unsubstituted alpha-12T (see Figure) is presented.
