Polar Liquid crystals with strongly positive dielectric anisotropies are of continuing interest to the display industry because they help to lower both the operating voltage and the total power consumption of LCDs in portable devices. Fluorinated heterocyclic materials (Figure, right, where MG is a mesogenic group) are shown here to exhibit improved mesophase properties and higher dielectric anisotropies than commonly used materials based on carbocyclic structures (Figure, left).
