THE NATIONAL-SCIENCE-FOUNDATION ADVANCED MATERIALS AND PROCESSING PROGRAM
Essay: The National Science Foundation (NSF) has been providing support for materials science research since 1972. The interacting components making up NSF's Advanced Materials and Processing Program, which began initially as a federal initiative in 1993, are described. The goals, levels and modes of support are briefly discussed, whereby the importance of partnerships, particularly between university, industrial and government laboratories, is emphasized. The article concludes with a look into the future.
