Thermotropic polymers containing charge-bearing mesogenic moieties in the repeat unit are rare. This article reports a self-assembly, two-component approach for the preparation of side-chain liquid-crystalline polymeric materials possessing charged hydrogen-bonded mesogenic groups. A unique feature of this system is that simple mixing of two non-mesogenic components (see figure) is used to produce a side-chain liquid-crystalline polymer.
